South African Cheese and Wine Festival



Last Sunday I went with Kora and Riaan to the yearly South African Cheese and Wine Festival (http://www.cheesefestival.co.za). For R75 you could taste hundereds of South African wines and cheeses. We were lucky with the weather and had a nice day at the Bien Donné farm near Franschoek.

Letzten Sonntag war ich mit Kora und Riaan auf dem South African Cheese Festival in der Nähe von Franschoek. Für R75 (€ 6) konnte man hunderte südafrikanische Weine und Käsesorten probieren (was wir dann auch reichlich ausgenutzt haben). Ansonsten haben wir gerade eine Feiertagswoche, d.h. Montag frei (Freedom Day, der war schon am Sonntag, aber muss in der Woche nachgeholt werden), dann 1. Mai wie in Deutschland, Freitag wird auch ein Feiertag nachgeholt, der auf ein Wochenende gefallen ist. Wir arbeiten also Dienstag und Mittwoch, da gibts leider nichts nachzuholen!

My new wet suit

Damit ich mir nicht immer einen Tauchanzug ausleihen muss, habe ich mir einen eigenen anfertigen lassen. Mir R2000 (€ 170) war das nicht viel teurer als einen von der Stange zu nehmen. Er sitzt perfekt. Wenn ich endlich meine NAUI Karte bekommen habe, kann ich dann auch meinen Advanced Diving Course anfangen.

I got my custom made new wet suit two weeks ago. It costed me R2000 (€ 170) and was just a bit more expensive then if I would have bought one in a regular shop. But this one fits perfect. Now I am just waiting for my NAUI card and I can start my next diving course.

That's what we do on Fridays!
And the question is: Will it blend?

After the traditional braai (Gurthwin, Maguerite , Peter and Johannes) we had some Wodka Ahoi before we started to play Sing Star with amazing results :-).

International Food Evening at University Stellenbosch


On Tuesday there was the yearly international food evening in the Nelsie. The Germans around Rosita prepared Zwiebelkuchen and Johannes for Hungary Szegediner Gulasch (his grandgrandpa was once in Hungary). Both meals were very lekker. There were students from 13 nations presenting there food(s).


Letzten Dienstag war internationaler Essensabend :-) an der Uni. Studenten aus 13 Nationen haben ihre Gerichte vorgestellt und für wenig Mäuse konnte überall probiert werden. Deutschland hat Zweibelkuchen vorgestellt und Johannes hat Szegediner Gulasch für Ungarn gemacht, da sein Urgroßvater auch schonmal in Ungarn war. Alles sehr lecker.

Rugby Maties vs. Tigers


Das Stadion (eines von mehreren) ist bekanntlich größer als das von Bielefeld.

Gestern war das Endspiel des Varsity Cup in Stellenbosch im Stadion der Uni. Unsere FNB Maties habe n gegen die Ikey Tigers (University Cape Town, something like Eintracht Braunschweig for Hannover 96) gespielt und in der letzten Spielminute noch einen try gemacht und damit den Cup gewonnen. Ich war mit Gurthwin und Alex da.

Yesterday the Maties won the final of the Varsity Cup in Stellenbosch against the Ikey Tigers from UCT. They made a try in the last minute of the game and everybody went crazy.



Nach dem fünftenmal DJ Ötzi habe ich es dann auch mal aufgenommen. das war schlimmer als bei jedem Aprés Ski den ich mitgemacht habe.

Letzten Sonntag, verspätestes Osterkaffeetrinken in Academia Block 3. Hier wird es jetzt abends sehr kühl und am Sonntag ist unser Tauchgang mit dem Underwaterclub leider auch wegen Regen ausgefallen. Aber Sonne scheint jetzt wieder und abends muss man halt eine lange Hose anziehen.

Last Sunday we had a late Easter Afternoon tea in Academia block 3. In the evenings it is getting colder now, but the sun is still warm, just in the evenings you have to wear long trousers.

For a good start in the week:

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: 2 litres of low fat milk, a carton of eggs, 2 litres of orange juice, a head of lettuce, half a dozen tomatoes, a 500g jar of coffee, a 250g pack of bacon

As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier.

While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, 'You must be single.'

The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selection that could have tipped off the Drunk to her marital status.

Curiosity getting the better of her, she said, 'Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct. But how on earth did you know that?'

The drunk replied, 'Cos you're ugly.'

Johannes, Chris und Liana an Chris letzten Abend in Stellenbosch. Wir waren im neu eröffneten Cubana in Stellenbosch. Die Hütte brennt, wie man unschwer im Hintergrund sehen kann.

Ach wenn es hier schon lange Winter sein soll sorgt die Klimaerwärmung für 30°C tagsüber. Es wird allerdings früh dunkel und abends meist auch etwas kühler als gewohnt (naja, grade nicht, aber immer öfter).
Letztes Wochenende waren Johannes und ich in Simonstown tauchen. Samstag haben wir dafür die Sachen eingekauft und nun fehlt noch der Wetsuit und die Bleigewichte zum vollkommenen Glück. Wir haben einen Stingray und einen Pyjamashark direkt vor unsere Nase gesehen. Demnächst starte ich einen Advanced Diver Course damit ich interessantere Tauchgänge machen kann. Es soll dabei ins Aquarium in Cape Town gehen, wo ein Ragged Tooth Shark seine Runden dreht, im neuen Kristallkäfig neben weißen Haien tauchen oder sonstwo Haie aufspüren. Leider habe ich keine Unterwasserkamera, da kann ich das alles garnicht mitteilen.

Chris hat uns vorerst verlassen. osCAR hat dafür jetzt die ganze Nacht einen neuen weißen Blechfreund mit inzwischen roten A-Säulen neben sich. Drücken wir mal die Daumen das Deutschland sucks und er im Juli wiederkommt.

Even if we should have no summer anymore, the weather is still great and we have up to 30°C with blue sky, nice beaches, cold drinks...
It gets darker now very early and at night it is quit cold (29°C). Last weekend I went with Johannes for a dive in Simonstown. It was very nice, saw a Pyjama Shark and a Stingray. Bought some soft gear for diving but still have to save money for the wetsuit. Will do the advanced diver course next month to have the chance for more exciting dives with all kinds of sharks. Pitty I dont own a underwater camera to show you that I was sitting last weekend on the back of a great white.
Chris is now back in Germany and actually, he is ill at the moment and has a cold and lies in bed. Can't happen overhere, so hurry up to come back. Chris' Chico "Schneewittchen" is no osCARs best friend as they can chat all night about A-Säulen and refusal of work in the morning.

Sunday=Beachday

Am Sonntag waren wir wieder am Koolbay Beach. Chris fährt nächste Woche nach Deutschland zurück und kommt erst im Winter wieder. Daher haben wir das gute Wetter am Wochenende nochmal genutzt.

Letzer Tag von Mella und Mosches Besuch. Wir sind vor dem Abschlussbraai noch an den schönsten Strand hier gefahren (Kool Bay). Nach dem Sonnenuntergang gings zurück nach Stellenbosch. Nun sind leider alle Besucher wieder in Deutschkand und in 91 Jonkerhoek ist es wieder ruhiger geworden (langweilig wird mir ja eh nicht). War eine tolle Zeit mit euch 5 und ich hoffe, dass ihr bald wiederkommt.

Letzten Montag musste ich zum Arzt weil ich die Nacht Schüttelfrost hatte. Aus unserem Urlaub habe ich als Andenken Rikettsien mitgebracht, die von Zecken übertragen werden und Tick Fever auslösen. Zum Glück war ich aber schnell beim Uni Doktor und nach zwei doofen Nächten ist jetzt dank Antibiotika alles wieder fit. Die zwei schwarzen Geschwüre an den Einstichstellen...nun gut thats Africa..., jedenfalls muss da Salbe und Pflaster drauf. Eine Stelle ist auf dem Rücken so bescheuert "angebracht worden", dass ich jetzt, wo Schwester Mella nicht mehr da ist, jeden Morgen Frühsport vor dem Spiegel mache um das Pflaster draufzubekommen. Gute Lachnummer: ich komme kaum ran, alles ist spiegelverkehrt, das Pflaster wandert ständig in die falsche Richtung, man müsste ein Video davon machen. Das Wetter ist gerade so heiss wie eine Herdplatte. In Deutschland sind es ja inzwischen auch 8°C, wird also auch wärmer.

Got Tick Fever as souvenir from my holiday in Sodwana. Two bad bad nights but thanks to antibiotics everything is back to normal. Have to cover the bites with plasters which is now my new morning sport as the fucking tick bite me in my back at a position I can hardly reach on my own. It is a good laugh when standing in front of the mirror, I can't reach the bite properly , everything is mirror-inverted and the plaster is moving always in the wrong direction. I miss nurse Mella who did that much better.
Weather overhere is very very hot and it seems in Germany it is getting warmer, too: 8°C.

I started working again and Mella, Alex and Steffi enjoyed a day in CT. Steffi left this morning but she might come back later this year with Frl. TOMPSEN.
